Fisher folk from Thailland:

One of the first contributes to the discussion has been given from a foisher folk from Thailland. Mavis Alvares from Cuba

Report of the principal points of the meeting that took place in South America, in which it has been said that the end of hunger is possible. Food sovereignty is an essential condition forthe end of hunger in the world.Indigenuos agriculture, in particular fishing, has to be evalued, since it is an essential value.
It is not possible to consider food as a commercial product.
Governments have to strenghten the contacts between civil society and food producers.

Mercy Karanja de Kenya:

It is very important to consider women, who work a lot in agriculture in Africa.
They are fighting, in Africa, and we must support them.
Right to food is in danger in Africa, because of wars and globalization.Agriculture in Africa gives us the opportunity of surviving, but agriculture suffers globalization too. The dream is to reach the consense to support Southafricans, since people diesfor hunger.
There is a big desert so we have to organize the production finding a balance.
We depend on the sell of our products in the african market, in which is fundamental the concept of food sovereignty, if we don’t have food our lives are in danger. We have to give the chance to talk to people who dies of hunger.
We continue to have more OGM that population don’t need. The problem is not the production but the market closed door for our products.
Peace and democracy are important and are in danger. People don’t have almost the right of living, there are many dangers and difference between cities and rural regions, where the hunger continue to kill people. Another danger that kills people is AIDS and we cannot ignore it.
It is important to speak with governments and the internationals communities, because it is important to remark that Africa can produce its own food.

Europe is not a union of developed countries like many think.
Europe is composed of three regions: European Union, countries which are going to enter the EU in a few years and eastern countries.
Domestic agriculture is in danger in all Europe. Farmers have to organize and widen themselves because they arelosing independence.
They are hardly paying: the cost of food production does not correspond to the price products, products seem to be very cheap in fact they are payed by other means, like taxes, since the government supports
food subsides.
Another important thing is the right to land and water. In respect of natural resource, the model is ecological agriculture: there is needof an agrarian policy that gives the right payments. Domestic coltures are the ones more in touch with land so that it’s worth to amplify them.
Another important issue is the transgenic question. By the moment there is a plan of action involving a moratory for transgenic productssince their use puts biodiversity in danger.

Maryam Rahmanian de Iran

We met together with civil national society in March, in which we talked about defeating hunger and poverty.
A politic will of indifference of governments is clear: lack of action for life and instead actions of war.
It’s absurd that civil society delegates from the south cannot come here to talk to us: chance of worldwide and regional movement has got more complicated since september 11th for us too.
Conflicts, bad governments and corruption put in danger food sovereignty. We ask them to stop international crimes: in our opinion, the occupation of the Palestinian territories is an aggression act which leads to the destruction of surviving resources, lack of political space. All this is part of a general strategic plan

Sarojeni Rengam de Malaysia:

More than 800 million people are suffering hunger in the world and most part is in Asia, for lack of commitment and political will.
In 2015 We’ll still assist to hunger in all the world!...
An exigence of people movements is producing one’s food through right to water, land and technology, taking decisions about the way of cultivating: pesticides for instance are dangerous both for human activities and environment. World Bank and IMF block us, so that our goal is to fight nations that use violence to increment multinationals’ affairs.
The fight is very clear:isfor land. We have to strenghten the fundamental right tofood sovereignty. Many little farmers suffer the lack of participation and democracy. Another important thing to improve is teaching women: their suffering is going on , since they are invisible, but women participation is important and the problem is their invisibility to base movements’ eyes too.
Gender justice is of fundamentalimportance.
In Asia we have a rich experience in participation against globalization, against landlords, resistence is growing up.
En Asia tenemos una muy rica esperencia en la participacion en contra de la globalizacion, en contra de los latifundistas: la resistencia va cresciendo tambien.

Linda Elswick de Estados Unidos

She talks of the situation in US and Canada.
8% of our population is in a situation of cronic food insecurity. The governament give food aid and 40% goes to child. United States deny to recognize the right to food: there are a few kinds of agricultural explotation and the forbidding of access to natural resources at the extent of the impossibility of choosing the different species that can be cultivated.
Another problem is racist discrimination against indigenous communties.
Industrial agricolture and fishing are finishing natural resources. All industry process put in danger food soveraignty in favor of transgenic products’ production and distribution: corn that has in Mexico its roots, is mixed now in the US in the market with transgenic corn.
Farmers are going to present a reclaim for the decrement of animals nativity because of transgenic products.
We represent indigenous workers, afroamericans, supporting food sovereignty: in the richest Country in the world hunger is present because of unsustainable agriculture and fishing.
