The dyne.org foundation runs free software workshops to introduce partecipants to the use of a 100% free GNU/Linux operating system for media production and artistic creativity.

Every partecipant receives a dyne:bolic CD with all necessary software, free to be used and redistributed (GNU GPL license). The notions acquired will not make it necessary to buy any commercial software, the students will be free to produce and distribute their own creations without depending from the speculation of commercial companies.

The workshop consists in an hands-on experience employing GNU/Linux for digital artisanship and tactical media, exploring various ideas and practices of crafting and recycling technologies, to stimulate students towards the invention of novel forms of interactive computing and social networking.

The workshop is held by Jaromil for classes of 10-20 people. Upon request it can focus on a particular aspect of multimedia production and communication practices. The language of the workshop can be english or italian.

About the software adopted

dyne:bolic is an operating system providing several instruments for creativity with multimedia: all that is needed to produce and share audio, video and images, from recording to editing and live streaming... as well a complete software development environment. Besides the particular attention to multimedia, dyne:bolic is extremely easy to employ and use, plus it runs efficently even on less recent computers.

100% free

All components in dyne:bolic can be freely redistributed, copied and modified according to basic freedom rights for users indicated by the GNU license guidelines. This ensures students to be free to produce anything they want with what they learn, as their knowledge is openly shared and exchanged, not owned by any company that can restrict their rights to produce and redistribute creations.

In education we believe that independence from commercial influences is an important point to make it available to the most and to not endorse or promote merchantile interests within public institutions.

Since 2001 dyne.org is independently developing one of the few GNU/Linux operating systems considered 100% FREE by the Free Software Foundation itself, as they are also mirroring it on the gnu.org server, see:

As well by the Ibiblio public library on http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/dynebolic/

quality

As a real proof of quality and artisanal passion we dedicate in developing our tools, our creation has been nominated in the top 10 open source software of 2005, when we also became part of the Linux Audio consortium of professional open source audio software.

wide adoption

Since its existance dyne:bolic GNU/Linux has been redistributed all across the world by magazines and of course being freely downloadable online, summing up to a reasonable estimation of half a million copies burned all across the globe. As of today our documentation base is rapidly growing and the community around it is fervently partecipating with experiences and ideas, while dyne:bolic comes complete with all compiler tools and documentation to be re-adapted by anyone to his or her own needs.

Freedom of creation workshop

In the world of artistical creation, free software means freedom of expression. We will examine the various software available for recording editing and publishing of audio/video materials, drawing possible paths for the creativity of the students which can openly choose a direction within the vast choice of possibilities offered. Progressing thru the workshop each student will be encouraged to use and adapt the software that suits best to his or her own ideas and needs.

This workshop explains various techniques of multimedia production using various free and open source software, it suits well a class that is just beginning to approach the topic.
