 * JACK Audio Connection Kit
 * X resolution change
 * multiple monitor support
 * ltsp, so only one server with dynebolic and all other clients can boot directly into x without needing expesive hardware. can make lots of 386/486 be usefull again.

 * What about if I could install a new application on my hard-disk and then burn a new Dynebolic Bootable CD including it?

 * Docking
   *A simple script for an HD installation ( knoppix like )
 * Xfree
   * resolution change
   * synaptics touch pad driver, really needed for laptops, can be probably be found at http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/
   * multiple monitor support, really needed for more serious veejay stuff
Line 12: Line 21:
   * Necessary kernel extensions "squashfs" and "OpenMosix" are not available for kernel versions above 2.4.22. -martin
 * Drivers (hardware support) for:
   * WebCam Go (Creative Labs). Driver: [http://go.lamarinapunto.com/modules/news/ w9968cf] -axeloide
   * Wacom Graphire II tablet mouse - I can't use dynebolic at all as I only have the tablet: X-Evian includes support for this already so I suspect drivers are easilyavailable.
   * Prism54 wireless chipset, http://prism54.org, included in kernel 2.6.5 :) (though still unclear whether firmware is free software)
   * Atmel wireless chipset, http://atmelwlandriver.sourceforge.net
   * vloopback (see http://veejay.sourceforge.net/mini_howto.html)
   * SAA7134 Chipset (see http://linux.bytesex.org/v4l2/saa7134.html)
Line 14: Line 31:
 * Sweep, audio processor [http://sweep.sf.net/]
   * Sweep has a problem: it keeps all of the soundfile in RAM (or swap), whereas rezound uses swapfiles of its own in the same directory as the audio file. In a typical dynebolic situation, the user has audio files on a big (windows) hard disk partition, but no swap, so sweep would not work on large files. Sweep is built with the GNU-head philosophy that lack of physical memory is a hardware problem : ( -martin
   * It also can't play audio continuuosly - the audio cuts out briefly when the display flips from page to page, even when you run it as root. -martin
   * The user-interface is prettier than rezound. Do we care? -martin
   * The scratching feature is infantile. TerminatorX does this better. -martin
 * GNUsound, audio processor [http://gnusound.sf.net/]

=== With JACK support ===
 * CheeseTracker, tracker [http://www.reduz.com.ar/cheesetronic/index.php?section=2]
 * Hydrogen, drum machine [http://hydrogen.sf.net/]
 * SpiralSynth Modular, nice modular synthy thingy [http://www.pawfal.org/Software/SSM/]
 * POV-Ray, a raytracing software [http://www.povray.org]
 * veejay, VJ app [http://veejay.sf.net/], with vloopback it can be used in combination with other apps
 * mvc, Motion Video Capture, [http://www.turbolinux.com.cn/~merlin/mvc/]
 * alsa-tools and alsa-firmware packages for card specific tools
 * Cinepaint (ex Film Gimp) (possibly in replacement for Gimp but more likely in addition to it) [http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net]
 * Lame mp3 encoder. most music players wouldn't get anythng but good old mp3 files..
 * LyX, a document processor based on LaTeX. a Must for writers. [http://www.lyx.org]
 * Firefox popular pluggins (Flash and MPlayer especially) [http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.htm]
 * ekg2 - im client [http://ekg2.org/]
 * GNU Gadu - is an "Instant Messenger" program created to work with
protocols popular in Poland (but not only). [http://gadu.gnu.pl/index.php?lang=en&page=news]
 * Qvwm+xfm [http://www.qvwm.org/]
 * Rocks'n'Diamonds [http://www.artsoft.org/rocksndiamonds/] + Levels & Artwork :)
 * PowerManga in fullscreen
Line 31: Line 51:
 * Creox, a real time sound processor, [http://www.uid0.sk/zyzstar/?creox]
 * Freqtweak, super cool frequency band mangler [http://freqtweak.sf.net/]
 * JACK-Rack, LADSPA effectbox [http://pkl.net/~node/jack-rack.html/]
 * qjackctl, extremely handy JACK controller [http://qjackctl.sf.net/]
 * xmms-jack, allows xmms to play over JACK [http://xmms-jack.sf.net/]
 * Creox, a real time sound processor, [http://www.uid0.sk/zyzstar/?creox], it's really nice as a guitar effector, and is easier to use than for instance jack-rack.

What do you think should be removed from dynebolic, and why?

== Features ==

=== Fluxbox ===

Fluxbox and Windowmaker seem to give almost exactly the same functionality.
They seem as bad as each other to me, :) and having two systems to do the same thing
increases complexity, and doubles the work in maintaining the menus etc etc.
(which, in practice, is not done: in d:b 1.1.1, the flux box menu is months out of date
and does not reflect reality.)
-martin

 * Maybe xpde can take over one of them? Many Gnubies would feel at home instantly :) http://xpde.com/
 * I think that qvwm+xfm [http://www.qvwm.org/] it's much better...
== Applications ==

=== Lives video editor ===

LiVES decodes each frame into a single JPEG file in /tmp.
3 hours of Lord of the Rings at 25 frames per second is a LOT of files, never mind the disk space.
LiVES is unusable as a direct result of this.
Another video editor (cinelerra) just moves up and down the file and seems to have
little problem with even the largest file. This is the right approach.
