Il nome dal suono nipponico non deve trarre in inganno. Netsukuku
e' l'innovativo software di rete, Open Source e tutto italiano,
presentato al recente meeting del World Summit on the Information
Society, tenutosi a Ginevra lo scorso 18 Maggio. L'applicativo
rientra tra le 375 iniziative (di cui solo tre italiane), recensite
nel WSIS Golden Book, e che, secondo l'Unione Internazionale delle
Telecomunicazioni, rappresentano un valido contributo verso la
realizzazione di una Societa' dell'Informazione nella quale le
ICT potranno essere usate ovunque e da tutti (*). Netsukuku
nasce dall'idea di sfruttare in modo rivoluzionario le potenzialità
della tecnologia wi-fi, rendendo i PC capaci di collegarsi all'infinito
tra loro e di gestire autonomamente un traffico dati pari a quello di
Internet. Il programma funziona in modo molto semplice: gli utenti
mettono l'antenna del proprio dispositivo wi-fi (Scheda di rete o
Access Point) in posizione accessibile agli altri, e, cosi' facendo,
i PC sui quali il software Netsukuku è stato installato danno vita
ad un processo di concatenamento che puo' proseguire all'infinito,
in maniera del tutto autonoma, e senza che esistano limiti teorici
all'espansione di questo nuovo cyberspazio. PC posti agli antipodi
del globo si "vedranno" anche in mancanza di copertura radio, poiche',
in attesa di backbone o satelliti dedicati, i collegamenti si
stabiliscono su Internet, con un ingegnoso sistema di "tunnel virtuali".
Il software si fa, inoltre, carico di mantenere un sistema di autogestione
diffusa di tutti i siti web, appositamente concepito per non dover
ricorrere ad alcun supporto esterno. Netsukuku rappresenta, in definitiva,
un'importante iniziativa nel panorama Open Source, che ambisce a
rivoluzionare l'uso dell'affermata tecnologia wireless, offrendo a tutti
l'opportunita' di essere fautori/fruitori consapevoli di una connettivita'
allargata e distribuita, improntata alla filosofia P2P. Che sia pronta a
partire una rete alternativa e complementare Internet? Agli utenti la
risposta.

The name sounds Japanese but you haven't to mistake: Netsukuku is an
Italian innovative networking tool, recently presented at the WSIS
meeting, held in Geneva the last 18th of May.
This software is among the 375 initiatives included inside the WSIS
Golden Book that, according to the ITU, can give a valid contribution
to build an inclusive Information Society, where anyone, anywhere is
a citizen (*).
Netsukuku is based on the idea to exploit in a revolutionary way the
great potentiality of the wi-fi technology, making the PCs able to
interconnect to each other and to self manage a traffic of data comparable
to the Internet one.
The application works in a very simple way: the users put their own wi-fi
device antennas on an accessible allocation, and, doing so, an uncountable
number of PCs with Netsukuku software installed make possible a meshing
process continuing endlessly and in a totally autonomous way, without
finding any theoretical limit to the diffusion of this unique kind of
global peer to peer network.
In such a way, PCs at the opposite pole of the globe will be able to
recognize each other, even when there is a lack of radio coverage, as long
as the links can be build over the Internet, through an ingenious system of
"virtual tunnels".
Moreover, the Netsukuku software takes care to manage all web sites
by a self-sustained and distributed system, purposely conceived to avoid any
external support.
Netsukuku represents, in matter of fact, an important initiative in the field
of Open Source, whose ambitious goal is to introduce a revolutionary use of
the successful wi-fi technology, giving everybody the chance to be a conscious
builder/user of an enlarged, toll-free and distributed connectivity, based on
the P2P philosophy, where even the access to Internet will be shared by
all the users, that devolve into the Netsukuku net the bandwidth they don't use
at the moment, in order to find it anywhere at anytime.
Is this alternative cyberspace, complementary to the Internet, ready to take off?
It's up to the users to decide.
